The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is a welcoming community where people come together to explore history through hands-on activities, crafts, combat, arts, cooking, music, research, and more. You don’t need to be an expert, have a costume, or know anything about medieval history to join us, just bring your curiosity!
Whether you want to learn a new skill, make friends, participate in events, or simply see what the SCA is all about, there’s a place for you here. Come as you are, ask questions, and discover what interests you!
Archery
SCA archery is a fun and welcoming way to experience a historic skill while enjoying some friendly competition. Whether you’re an experienced archer or have never picked up a bow before, there are opportunities to learn, practice, and participate at your own pace. Heavy Fighting
SCA Heavy Fighting is a full-contact armored combat sport inspired by the weapons and fighting styles of the Middle Ages. Fighters wear protective armor and use rattan weapons to recreate the excitement of medieval combat in a safe, structured environment. Whether you’re interested in fighting, learning about armor and weapons, or simply cheering from the sidelines, there’s a place for you! Arts and Sciences
Arts & Sciences, or A&S, is where we explore the skills, crafts, knowledge, and creativity of the pre-seventeenth-century world. From cooking, brewing, sewing, and fiber arts to woodworking, metalworking, music, calligraphy, research, and more, A&S gives everyone a chance to learn, create, and share their interests with others. You don’t have to be an expert—A&S is about curiosity, discovery, and having fun while bringing history to life!
Atlantia and our Neighbors
The Kingdom of Atlantia is one of the regional kingdoms of the Society for Creative Anachronism, encompassing Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and a small portion of Georgia.
Atlantia is a vibrant community where people come together to explore the Middle Ages and Renaissance through Arts & Sciences, armored combat, fencing, archery, music, dance, feasting, research, and countless other activities. From local gatherings to large kingdom events, there are opportunities to learn new skills, make friends, volunteer, compete, teach, and simply enjoy being part of the community.
While Bright Hills is our local SCA group, we are part of a much larger community! The Kingdom of Atlantia is made up of many local groups, and our neighboring groups offer even more opportunities to attend events, practices, classes, and activities.
Barony of Highland Foorde
Located in western and northwestern Maryland, Highland Foorde covers Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington Counties. Their community offers a variety of SCA activities and events and is a great group to know if you travel throughout Maryland.
Barony of Lochmere
Lochmere covers Anne Arundel and Howard Counties in central Maryland. They are one of our closest neighbors and host a variety of activities, practices, and events throughout the year.
Shire of Roxbury Mill
Located in Montgomery County, Roxbury Mill is a shire with an active community of SCA enthusiasts. Their activities include things such as fencing, Arts & Sciences, and other events and gatherings.
Shire of Spiaggia Levantina
Spiaggia Levantina covers Maryland’s Eastern Shore. If you’re traveling across the Chesapeake or live on the Shore, this is the local group you’ll want to know. They host events and activities throughout the year.
Barony of Storvik
Storvik encompasses Washington, D.C., Prince George’s County, and portions of Montgomery County. It is one of Atlantia’s long-established baronies and has a wide range of activities, including armored combat, rapier, archery, Arts & Sciences, and more.
